This year I learned a math game called "Five-in-a-Row. The children played this game with parters. The goal of the game is to work together to cover five squares in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. This is played by the children using number cards to create equations to equal a sum on the game board. See photos below of the game in action.
The children celebrated "Dot Day" in Room 5. After reading the story "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds, we shared discussed that everyone can "make their mark". We created dots on small canvases using watercolor paint. These are on display outside our classroom.
Below is an excerpt from TheDotClub.org "The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe." One of my favorite reading lessons is teaching second graders that they can decide HOW they want to read a book. The children can decide if they want to read a book in a happy/vibrate tone, or a super scary, creepy voice. Maybe they want to read a book in a songlike way. They get to pick! Try this at home! Comment below the name of the book you read and HOW you decided to read it.
Enjoy! “My Promise to You”
I promise you every day your child will learn something. Some days they will bring it home in their hands. Some days they will bring it home in their heads, and some days they will bring it home in their hearts. -Valerie Welk If you would like to place an order for a Stratton PRIDE T-shirt, click the link below. On Friday We decorated our journals with photos and other artifacts. These images will help to generate ideas during our Writers' Workshop sessions.
Our second grade class had our first two math workshop sessions this week! We loved the activities "Ways to Fill" and "Building Cube Things". Take a look at the photos of the children in action!
Stratton's Ice Cream Social will take place on Tuesday, September 12th. Bring a picnic dinner and join other families for a sweet treat!
Many thanks to the Stratton PTO for ordering and delivering class supplies. If possible, each second grade family is asked to donate $30 for the supplies. Our class has received markers, crayons, sticky notes, pencils, folders, erasers and more. Below is a link to make the donation.
Thank you. Our classroom is ready to go on Tuesday! I can't wait to see you! Each student will receive a lanyard name tag.
These are some of my favorite September books. What are your favorite books for the first month of school? Add a comment to share.
