“Building Cube Things” is the name of one of our Math Workshop activities. I didn’t make up the name, but it’s fun to say! In this partner activity, each student counts around 50 cubes and builds something for their buddy to count. The children are asked to design their “thing” in a way that will be easy for his/her buddy to count. The children’s items were very creative!

We have read the story “Owl Moon”. This is one of our second grade’s “mentor texts”. We will dive in closely to see what craft moves Jane Yolen used and we will try out these moves in our own writing. Examples include; using our senses, alliteration and personification.

Morning Meeting

Each day during our Morning Meeting, two children will be able to share an item or talk about something important to them. The other children will be able to ask questions and provide compliments to the speaker. This activity is designed to help support the children’s speaking and listening skills. It also helps students practice giving and receiving compliments. Thank you to the current third graders who modeled this with our class.

Thank you to our literacy coach Dr. Magalhaes for joining our class to read “Wilma Jean the Worry Machine” by Julia Cook. We talked about strategies we could try when we are worried at school and home. We discussed what was the author’s purpose/lesson in the story.

Stratton Recess Closet

Stratton Recess Closet

The Stratton School PTO is happy to once again offer the Stratton Recess Closet. Children need fresh air and outdoor play everyday. If children forget their outdoor clothing or if they do not have access to outdoor clothing, they cannot play safely and enjoyably. The Recess Closet is a collection of necessary outdoor clothing so that every child at Stratton can be warm and dry during recess, no matter the weather. Our social workers will also pull from this collection for our children who need this clothing at home as well as school.

We are looking for volunteers to help this effort! If you are willing to help sort clothing donations and/or wash winter gear throughout the year, please email K.C. Kourtz at kckourtz@gmail.com. We are still doing an inventory of what we have from last year, but typically we collect: rain coats, rain boots, winter coats, snow pants, snow boots, and tough gloves -- in all sizes from 5T to children's 16. As you begin to sort through your children's outgrown items, please consider donating them to our recess closet. More information about the collection process will be coming soon -- thank you for hanging on to items!
