Grade 2; general Information

September 2014

**Second Grade First Day of School Newsletter**

 Dear Second Grade Families,

I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing summer.   I very excited to begin a
new school year at Stratton and look forward to teaching your children this
year.  Periodically I will be sending home classroom newsletters to keep you updated on the latest classroom news. Here is some information to get you started.  On
Curriculum Night, Date TBA we can answer other questions you may have.

THE BASICS

ARRIVAL- The first bell rings at 8:10.  Please send your first grader into the
class line on the playground by this time.  We encourage all students to walk in
independently.  If it is raining, the students will line up in the caf by class.
If your student is late, please enter through the front door,
where he/she will sign in with Mrs. Fischer, our secretary, sign up for lunch,
and walk to the classroom independently.  Please respect this rule.

DISMISSAL- School is dismissed at 2:10.
We will dismiss the students from the GYM doors between 2:10-2:15,
depending on our afternoon specials.
Our Tuesday early release days at 1:00.   If you are running late, your
child will be waiting for you at the office.

For any students going to other afterschool programs, such as
APTG or Boys/Girls Club, we have a list and will send the children with an
assistant teacher to their proper destinations.

If anything changes in your daily dismissal routine, please call
Mrs. Fischer, send an email (if prior to 24 hrs), or send a note via
folder.

We will not dismiss any students to anyone else without your
  permission.  We expect parents to
notify us of any changes, (rather than students making their own “playdate
plans”).

STAY SHARP FOLDER
Please send in the book that your student received in June in the blue Stay
Sharp Folder.  These books are part
of our classroom library.

LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
- Please take the time to label lunch boxes, jackets, sweatshirts, boots, and
backpacks.  It is very helpful for all of us!  The lost and found is
located outside the caf.

 SNACK
We will be having morning snack.
Please send in for your student a healthy snack (and drink) for this
time. Crunchy snacks such as veggies, fruit, crackers, pretzels are great! We do
have a water fountain if anyone would prefer water.
Please let your student knows which is his/her snack.
We are limited to about a 10 minute snack time.
We often have to remind the students, “This is snack and not a buffet.”

LUNCH-
Our lunch time is from 11:30-12, which includes lunch and recess.
In inclement weather, we will have indoor recess in our classrooms.  Most days we have our Specials
immediately following lunch at 12:10.

BACKPACK
– We ask that each child carries a backpack to and from school. Please check
your child’s folder each evening, and feel free to send in any notes or email us
with information that will be useful for us.

BIRTHDAYS
– You are welcome to send in a wrapped book or game for your child to unwrap and
donate to the class to celebrate your child’s special day.
Unfortunately we cannot celebrate with snacks!  We
ask that birthday invitations are not to be distributed at school unless the
entire class or all boys or all girls are invited.
We don’t want any hurt feelings.
We will be celebrating summer birthdays in June.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
–Parents as volunteers are welcome. We will explain more at Curriculum night
when parent volunteers are needed as mystery readers, Room Parents, Copy
King/Queen , assistants for projects, and chaperones on a field trip.

SPECIALISTS
-The children will be having Gym, Library, Music, and Art. On Gym days the
children need to wear rubber sole shoes and shorts or pants. We will be sending
home a schedule as soon as it is finalized.

 HOMEWORK-
We will be starting homework in October.
Details at Curriculum Night (9/19).

CURRICULCUM NIGHT-Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 19th (time TBA) .  You are invited to your first grader’s classroom for a presentation regarding our daily routines and curriculum, and answer questions you may have regarding first grade.
Please not that this is a PARENTS ONLY event.

Now that we have the basics covered, we look forward to getting
to know you and your child throughout the school year.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Remember: an early bedtime and a good breakfast will give your
child a head start on his/her day!

We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

 Sincerely,
Julie Barth
