Welcome to Third Grade!
September 6, 2012
Dear Third Grade Families,
Welcome back! We have just completed a wonderful first day of school filled with routines, directions, rules and prospects of things to come. The children were very attentive and enthusiastic.
We would like to give you a little information today and we would like to continue to inform you of grade three happenings through notices throughout the year. As you talk to your child each school day, please let us know if you have any questions regarding school issues. We will be happy to answer any questions/concerns as they arise. There will also an informational night on Wednesday, October 3rrd which will address our curriculum and to explain class policies in detail.
Homework is assigned every day with few exceptions. Each Monday your child will receive a homework packet that will include the homework assignments for the week. On the cover you will notice a suggested homework schedule in order for your child to complete his/her activities. Each packet must be completed and returned on Fridays and parents/guardians will be responsible for signing the front cover indicating that each page of the packet has been reviewed. Expect your child to work approximately 30 minutes each day on homework assignments.
Reading Math logs: We expect that each third grader should be reading for at least 20 minutes each day including weekends. We are encouraging the children to read 5 minutes aloud to a parent/guardian and 15 minutes silently. Reading logs will usually be sent home on Friday and will be due the following Friday. We will discuss this further at our informational meeting. Throughout the year we will also send home Math Logs for the children to indicate the amount of time that they have studied their math facts. We will begin the year with a review of important addition and subtraction facts (examples: doubles and near doubles). The children will then begin to learn their multiplication facts late in the fall and we will begin to introduce division late in term two.
Birthday Policy: If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday with the class, it is our wish for you to honor the day with nonfood items. (In the past we have had children dedicate their favorite books to the class library, bring in pencils, bookmarks, stickers, small notebooks, or other school item.)
Third graders will be dismissed each day from the Pheasant Street doors.
The children will have an opportunity to have a short mid-morning snack. Feel free to send in a healthy snack, drink, and a napkin each day.
We look forward to meeting you all soon!
Thank you,
Mrs. Julie Barth and Mrs. Amy Lees
